Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

Rajul Patel - Mobile Medicare ClinicRajul Patel '01, '06, professor of pharmacy practice, received a 2018 United Way–Stockton Community Council Mini-Grant Award for $1,250; a 2018 United Way–Manteca/Lathrop/Escalon/Ripon Community Council Mini-Grant Award for $1,500; a 2018 United Way–Tracy Community Council Mini-Grant Award for $800; a 2018 Human Services Agency–Healthy Seniors–Investigator grant for $3,278; a 2017 Kaiser Permanente–Central Valley Area Charitable Organizations-Mobile Medicare Clinics grant for $45,000; and a 2017 Human Services Agency–Healthy Seniors-Investigator grant for $35,059. Each of the grants will support the efforts of the Medicare Mobile Clinics outreach events providing Medicare recipients help with their prescription drug benefits and other health screenings.

Eberhardt School of Business

Margaret RobertsMargaret Roberts, director of the Eberhardt Career Management Center, received a service award for significant contributions over time from the MBA Career Services Employer Alliance for her significant contributions to the organization. Since first getting involved in 2010, Roberts has assumed a number of significant leadership roles, including serving on the Global Conference Programs Committee, two terms as vice president/global conference liaison, and two terms as conference co-chair. This year, she led the efforts of the local employer outreach team. "Margaret always steps up when asked to take on a leadership role, and puts a tremendous amount of time and passion into the organization," said the citation.  

Pacific Technology

Faye Snowden, senior project manager, passed the Project Management Institute (PMI) Professional and Business Analysis Certification Exam on June 23. This certification is globally recognized and validates the recipient's knowledge, skills and experience to contribute to project strategic and organizational success. Snowden leads university-wide projects and is also a Certified Project Management Professional and teaches a Project Management Professional (PMP) Prep Course at Pacific. The university is a Registered Education Provider by PMI. The PMP is a registered trademark of the Project Management Institute Inc.

Publications

Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry

Darren Cox, professor of diagnostic sciences, co-authored the article, "Investigation of immune cell markers in feline oral squamous cell carcinoma," published in Veterinary Immunology and Immunopathology.  

Ove Peters, professor of endodontics, co-authored the article, "Association of manual or engine-driven glide path preparation with canal centring and apical transportation: a systematic review," published in the International Endodontics Journal.  

McGeorge School of Law

Michael P. Malloy, distinguished professor of law, had the third of four 2018 supplements to his three-volume treatise, "Banking Law and Regulation" released by Wolters Kluwer. The supplement offers up-to-date coverage of current developments in the regulation of depository institutions, including a discussion of the Congressional Review Act and the November 2017 disapproval of the CFPB Arbitration Agreements rule, and comments on continuing trends in litigation concerning whistleblower protection under the Dodd-Frank Act.

Zhu Zhou '14, assistant clinical professor of pharmaceutics and medicinal chemistry, co-authored the article, "Risk of Clinically Relevant Pharmacokinetic-based Drug-drug Interactions with Drugs Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Between 2013 and 2016," published in Drug Metabolism and Disposition (Vol. 46, No. 6).    

Pacific Technology

Peggy Kay, assistant vice president for technology customer experience, co-authored the article, "Aligning for Partnership: How Enterprise IT Can Help Transform the Institutional Mission," which was published in the June 18 issue of the EDUCAUSE Review, a digital and bimonthly print publication for the higher education IT community. Kay's article examines how organizations must become strategic partners in their institutions to support and further IT's ongoing evolution.  

Presentations 

College of the Pacific

Jessica Grady, assistant professor of psychology, presented "Parental warmth helps shy toddlers to be bold" and "Relations among parental emotion modeling, cultural orientations, and child adjustment in toddlerhood" at the biennial meeting of the International Congress on Infant Studies, held June 30–July 3 in Philadelphia. Delaney Callan '19 was a co-author on the presentation.   

Caroline Schroeder, professor of religious studies, presented "A Homily is a Homily is a Corpus: Digital Approaches to Shenoute of Atripe" at a conference on The Transmission of Early Christian Homilies from Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages, hosted by the Goethe University and the Humanities Research Institute in Frankfurt, Germany.  

Elisa Toloba, assistant professor of physics, presented her latest work on ultra-diffuse galaxies, "Internal dynamics and dark matter halos of ultra diffuse galaxies," at the conference Stellar Halos Across the Cosmos, held July 2–6 in Heidelberg, Germany. There is controversy over whether these galaxies lie within the most dark matter-dominated galaxies in the universe, or whether they contain no dark matter at all. Toloba analyzed a sample of three of these galaxies where the dark matter content is especially high. Part of the conference was devoted to this discussion. Toloba also was the chair, keynote presenter and moderator a special session on the topic.  

Several food studies students, faculty and alumni participated and presented research at the 2018 Association for the Study of Food and Society annual conference, held Jun 13-16 in Madison, Wisconsin:

  • Polly Adema, director and associate professor of food studies, moderated and presented as part of a roundtable session "Boots on the Ground: A Roundtable About Community Engagement and Impact."
  • Dawnie Andrak '17 participated as a presenter in the above roundtable, drawing on her expertise with the Community Alliance with Family Farmers and the nascent organization California Foodways.
  • Erica Peters, instructor of food studies, shared findings from her current research project in the paper presentation "Reimagining Restaurants for Women, without Meat or Drink."
  • Kendall Shurance '18 talked about her thesis project in the paper presentation "Tipping Ideology: Comparative Rhetorical Critique of the National Restaurant Association and Restaurant Opportunities Center United."  

McGeorge School of Law

Melissa Brown, professor of lawyering skills and director of legal clinics, will be a discussant for the session "Experiential Learning in Trust & Estates — Clinic, Simulations and Externships — Responding to ABA standard 303(a)(3)," at the Southeastern Association of Law Schools (SEALS) Annual Conference Aug. 5-11 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Discussion group participants will share their varied experiences with experiential learning in this field.  

Stephen Cody, visiting assistant professor of law, presented " The Normalization of National Security Exceptionalism: Judicial Deference, Prosecutorial Power, and Constitutional Retrogression in the Age of Trump" at CrimFest, an annual workshop for legal scholars writing about criminal law, held at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, Yeshiva University, on July 16 in New York City. He also will present "Victims, Patrons, and Criminal Courts After Atrocities" at the American Sociological Association annual meeting, held Aug. 11–14 in Philadelphia.

School of Engineering and Computer Science

Vivek Pallipuram, assistant professor of computer engineering, and his research team presented their paper, "A2Cloud: An Analytical Model for Application to Cloud Matching to Empower Scientific Computing," at IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Cloud 2018 held July 2–7 in San Francisco. IEEE is the world's largest technical professional society.
