The University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law’s Capital Center for Law & Policy will bring together elected officials, scholars, and policy experts to discuss recent legislative developments and the legal landscape in California once again. The Capital Center for Law & Policy will host its annual Legislative Leaders Speaker Series on Tuesday, February 22, 2022.

This year’s event, “Supporting Students and Battling Big Oil,” will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. PST, in the Grand Salon at McGeorge School of Law and will be available via livestream. The moderated discussion will be followed by a hosted reception. The event is free and open to the public.

“McGeorge’s location in Sacramento at the hub of policy and politics in California provides our students with unparalleled access to the legislative and policy-making process,” said Erin O’Neal Muilenburg, Director of the Capital Center for Law & Policy. “Our annual Legislative Leaders Speaker Series allows our students to interact with California policymakers and become a part of the conversation on complex policy issues while in law school.”

The program will feature a keynote presentation by California Sen. Monique Limón, who represents the 19th Senate district. She was born and raised in the district that she represents. Education and women’s issues have been top priorities for Sen. Limón in her career in the Legislature. She served two terms on the Santa Barbara Unified School Board, as a Commissioner on the Santa Barbara County Commission for Women, and as Assistant Director for the McNair Scholars Program at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She has also authored numerous environmental bills that squarely take on the oil industry in California.

The annual Legislative Leaders Speaker Series event is sponsored by the Capital Center for Law & Policy at the University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law. McGeorge School of Law’s Governmental Affairs Student Association, Latinx Law Students Association, Women’s Caucus, and Womxn of Color Collective are co-sponsoring the event.
